Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandigarh | When To Visit?

Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is a habitat for numerous animal, plant, and bird species. Not only Indian tourists but also Foreigners visit this sanctuary to witness the rich biodiversity. The sanctuary stretches over an area of about 2600 hect.

It forms the part of Sukhna lake catchment area falling in Shivalik hills. Shivalik hills are ecologically sensitive and geologically unstable and thus are susceptible to soil erosion during rains. The forest department had sustained several soil and water conversation measures. Consequently, they got the best results.  Moreover, the afforestation caused the development of very good forest in the hilly catchment area. Thus Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary emerges as an abode for abundant fauna.

About Flora, Fauna, and Avifauna At Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary

Flora:

Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary possesses rich vegetation. Some of the famous plant species in the sanctuary include Acacia catechu (Khair), Acacia modesta (Phulai), Acacia Arabica (Kikar), Acacia Leucophloea (Raeru), Dalbergia Sisoo (Shisham), Bauhinia Racemosa (Kachnar), Emblica Officinalis (Amla), Morus alba (Tut), Lannea Grandis (Jhingan), Diospyros Montana (Kendu), Murraya Koenigii (Kari Patta), Prosopis Juliflora (Musket), and much more.

Fauna:

The sanctuary boasts rich biodiversity. It is a habitat for abundant fauna. Some of the famous wildlife species that one can easily find in the sanctuary include Spotted Deer, Jungle Cat, Jackal, Small Indian Civet, Pangolin, Porcupine, Rhesus Monkey, Common Mongoose, Squirrel, and Human Langur etc.

Avifauna:

It contains nearly 150 varied variety of bird species. The list of famous inhabitant birds is Peacock,  Hoopoes, Hornbills, Barbets, Woodpeckers, Rollers, Barn owls, Red jungle fowl, Grey partridge, Cuckoos, Nightjars, Golden Oriole, Kingfisher, Swifts, Parrots, Doves, Jacanas, Plovers, Coots, Hawks, Geese, Swan, Ducks, Grebes, Black drongo, Treepie, Jungle Crow, Bulbul, Hill myna, Koel, Bee-eater, etc.

In addition to them, it is an abode for reptiles such as Cobra, Common Krait, Indian Python, Turtle, Gho and Insects like Butterflies, Moth, and Honey-bee.

Timings:

The tourists and visitors can visit the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary from dawn to dusk. However, no one will be allowed to stay inside of the sanctuary after the dusk. The sanctuary remains open all days of the week.
