Mudanthurai wildlife Sanctuary, a tiger reserve located in the South Western Ghats of Thirunelvelli district of Tamil Nadu. The Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary covers an extensive area of about 895 sq km. Both the Kalakad wildlife sanctuary and the Mundanthurai wildlife sanctuary was combined and form into Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in 1988.
The reserve is famous for its tigers but these elusive creatures are hard to spot. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the spectacle view of herds of elephants at the watering holes.The forest is home to leopards, panthers, wild dogs, sloth bear, Lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur, bonnet macaque, common Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, flying squirrels, Sambar and more. Bird lovers too can enjoy the view of many birds that flock here including Great Indian Hornbill, Oriental Bay, Great Pied Hornbill, Grey Headed Bulbul, Malabar Grey Hornbill and Broad Tailed Grass Warbler.
Flora in Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary
This Kalakad Mundanthurai wildlife sanctuary is also a home to wide variety of flora like rolling parkland, open grassland, swamps, valleys and Nullas. Important species include evolutionarily significant Sarcandra, a vessel less Angiosperm, Paphiopedulum, druryi, a rare orchid and Nageia wallichiana a broad leaved and only conifer tree of south India.
Fauna in Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary
It is mainly known for conservation of tigers. Apart from this there are number of wildlife having different species exist in this park like 79 number of leopards, 73 number of tigers, 172 number of mouse deer, 61 number of Nilgiri languor ,1,966 number of Chital, 63 number of crocodiles, 123 number of sloth beer. The plant and forest increases the beauty of the sanctuary. In addition to this you can also see 77 types of mammals and 81 types of reptiles, 33 types of fishes , 273 types of birds and 150 types of plants.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit is between October and January. The sanctuary is open to the public from October to the summer months. The days are warm and humid. one should consider visiting the sanctuary before the summer sets in.
Mundanthurai has a unique and different forest cover, with different parts of the forest receiving different amounts of rainfall. The lower forests receive an average annual rainfall of less than 1,000 mm. while the upper forest gets more than 4,000 mm rainfall each year. The upper region of the forest becomes wet and the lower part is deciduous.
The average temperature in summer is recorded as 44 degree centigrade. In winter it is pleasant and recorded as 24 degree centigrade. The western part of the forest receives southwest monsoons while the eastern part receives northeast monsoons.

The nearest airport is Trivandrum Airport, 200 kilometers away. Madurai airport is 223 km away , Tuticorin airport is 98 km away.
By Train :
The nearest railways station is the Tirunelveli Junction about 38 kilometers away.
By Road :
From Manjolai, it is 47.4 km drive on the NH 45 which takes about 1 hour and a half. Regular bus services are available. It takes more than one hour to reach.
